The Award – What is it?

  • Are you up for a challenge?
  • Are you between the ages of 14 and 24?
  • Do you want to meet new people?
  • Do you want to make new friends?
  • Do you want to enjoy new experiences?

Then the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Programme is for you!!

The Award is a flexible, interesting and fun-packed programme for all young people between the ages of 14 and 24 regardless of their background. Participants pursue a number of self chosen activities over a set length of time.

It is entirely voluntary and is structured so the Participants can design their own unique program centred around their interests and passions.
It’s not a piece of cake, but it is well worth the effort.

You can opt for activities which you are already involved in or you can start something you’ve always dreamed of doing but haven’t had the reason to begin. Your programme can be full of activities and projects that get you buzzing, and along the way you’ll pick up experiences, friends and talents that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
The Award is offered at three levels : Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level takes a set amount of time, becoming longer  as you proceed from one level to another, however more rewarding.

You achieve your Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections – Service, Physical Recreation, Skills, Adventure Journey and a Residential Project (if you’re going for Gold).

Service : Give a little back

The Service section of the Award encourages young people to volunteer their time to and understand the benefits of this service to their community

Physical Physical : Work up a sweat

The Physical Recreation section of the Award encourages young people to participate in sport or other physical recreation for the improvement of health and fitness.

Skills: Improve or discover your talent

The Skills section of the Award encourages the development of personal interests and practical and social skills.

Adventurous Journey : A Journey to measure in friends not in miles

The Adventurous Journey section encourages a sense of adventure whilst undertaking a team journey or expedition. As part of a small team, participants will plan, train for and undertake a journey with a defined purpose in an unfamiliar environment.

Residential : Experience the world

The Residential Project, completed only at Gold level, aims to broaden participants’ horizons through involvement with others in a residential setting.

Why should you do the Award?

Actually the question should be : why would you not do it? Doing the Award is a fun filled adventure from the start. You’ll enjoy loads of new experiences, discover talents you never thought you had, challenge yourself every step of the way and meet loads of people just like you from all over the world.

And there are more reasons why starting the Award is a good idea :

  • It enables you  to learn practical and social skills that are valuable to your life and career development.
  • Since you choose your own activities, you’re basically getting recognition for doing things you enjoy.
  • The Award is about personal development not competition with others.
  • You’ll make a difference to other people’s lives and your own and build memories and friendships which will last a lifetime.
